Tenryuji & Sogenchi

Travel Date: 29 October 2010
Location: Saga-Arashiyama area, Kyoto
I heard that Tenryuji (天龍寺) is a must-go place for people who visits Arashiyama, especially in autumn for its beautiful autumn foliage. But with that said, I didn’t really expect much from it – kinda had enough of temples visiting from the day before.
Yet the Sogenchi (Sogen pond) garden totally caught my eyes. Very stunning landscape garden, probably the most beautiful one I have seen in Japan. Still hard to believe it has been retaining the same form as when it was designed in the 14th century by Muso Soseki. That’s about 700 years, wow.
How To Get There
- Take JR train from Kyoto station to Saga-Arashiyama station (嵯峨嵐山駅)
- Spend at least half day to explore the Saga & Arashiyama area, on foot or rent a bicycle!
