Hopped into this very Japanese looking restaurant called Choji-ya (丁字屋) and had nishin soba (900Y) for lunch. Totally love the fish (herring to be exact), it’s sweet and goes very well with the soba. Thumbs up!

I think nishin soba is a less known specialty of Kyoto, as mentioned here that seafood wasn’t common in the landlocked Kyoto in the past, so herring was brought to here from Japan Sea Coast after drying it. So I guess the herring I had was grilled / dried / smoked / marinated? Well doesn’t matter as long as it tastes good. :D

Love the traditional interior

How To Get There

  • Take JR train from Kyoto station to Saga-Arashiyama station (嵯峨嵐山駅)
  • It’s diagonally opposite of Arashiyama station (the station with Randen trams)
