Gion: Shijo Avenue

Posted on 13 March 2012

Travel Date: 30 October 2010
Location: Gion area, Kyoto

Besides geiko meeting in Hanami-koji, there’s many more stuff to do and see on Shijo avenue (四条通), like, shopping and eating! ^^

Omiyage Stores

Omiyage (お土産) means souvenirs, and Japanese love buying souvenirs for their families, friends, and co-workers wherever they went to. One thing I enjoyed a lot when traveling in Japan is picking omiyage for the love ones – just too many awesome options to choose from!

These manju looking omiyage look so good

Issen Yoshoku (壹銭洋食)

Didn’t go into Issen Yoshoku myself, however I read it’s an interesting (with some elements of kinkiness) restaurant that only sells one dish which looks like okonomiyaki. Not sure how’s the food but at each table there’s a young kimono mannequin lady who keeps you company – not too bad, eh? More stuff regarding the place can be found here.

Minami-za (南座)

Minami-za theatre is the birthplace of kabuki (歌舞伎), so you probably can find some of the finest kabuki performances here. The building looks kinda creepy with the green lights on at night though.

How To Get There

  • The closest station is Gion-Shijo station (祇園四条駅), less than 5min walk from there
