It’s Pontocho!

Posted on 15 March 2012

Travel Date: 30 October 2010
Location: Shijo area, Kyoto

Pontocho (先斗町) was the biggest surprised in Kyoto when I realised this is where the book cover of Escape to Japan has taken place. Overwhelmed. Hooray. Cheered.

It wasn’t in the plan to come here (nor did I know this place exists) but I’m really glad that somehow I discovered it. Pontocho is a very long, narrow, traditional looking alley with all kinds of restaurants on both sides. I actually walked from the beginning till the end of it (a kilometre long, maybe?) and decided to have my dinner at the very first restaurant by the entrance. So I walked back.

Things like this do happen once in a while I guess. But I’m still a happy kid! :)

How To Get There

  • The closest station is Gion-Shijo station (祇園四条駅), less than 5min walk from there
