To Mt Koya! (Koyasan)

Posted on 23 March 2012

Travel Date: 1 November 2010
Rail Pass – Koyasan-World Heritage Ticket: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2358_012.html

The journey from Kyoto to Mt Koya / Koyasan (高野山)

  • Take JR from Kyoto Station > Osaka Station > Shin-Imamiya Station (新今宮駅) – about 45 min in total
  • Buy Koyasan-World Heritage Ticket (2780Y) at Shin-Imamiya Station
  • Take Nankai Railways (南海電鉄) from Shin-Imamiya Station to Gokurakubashi Station (極楽橋駅) – about 90 min ride
  • Switch to cable car from Gokurakubashi Station to Koyasan Station – 5 min

It might look complicated but it really is not – basically I was just taking JR from Kyoto to Osaka, then to Mt Koya from Shin-Imamiya (which is still within the Osaka area) via Nankai Railways. Strongly recommend to get Koyasan-World Heritage Ticket from Nankai Railways to save some dollars and hassles on transportation when you’re up on Mt Koya itself.

Took me quite awhile to understand the train timetable

Koyasan-World Heritage Ticket, valid from 1st to 2nd November - it's November already!

The blue train is Nankai's Limited Express Rapi:t which commutes between Osaka and Kansai International Airport (KIX). Looks really cool with the round windows.

Train is coming! Taking this express train which is not so express to Mt Koya ^^

Cable car ride from Gokurakubashi Station

Arrived! But the weather ain't too good today :/
