Shojin Ryori: Dinner

Posted on 27 March 2012

Travel Date: 1 November 2010
Location: Eko-in, Mt Koya

One of the main things to experience during temple lodging in Japan is shojin-ryori (精進料理) – a Japanese Buddhist vegetarian cuisine, refer to here for more details.

In Eko-in (恵光院), my stay included a shojin ryori dinner and breakfast, both meals were sent and served in my room by monks. I got to admit that it feels kinda weird to eat alone in a very quiet closed room – normally at the very least I’d switch on the TV or laptop to make some noise, but somehow I was just eating in silent that night. ^^”

Good thing that the dinner was quite nice though. Of course, it was beautifully presented too.

A top view

Kombu, tofu-skin-looking thing, etc

Tempura vegetables

Konyaku (I think) and some sweet & sour looking stuff
